**Project:** Comprehensive Drupal Migrations, Responsive Theming & Mobile-First Agency Delivery
**Company:** North Studio
**Role:** Senior Developer
**Period:** 2010–2011

## Introduction
As the digital needs of higher-education institutions and public sector organizations grew rapidly in the early 2010s, many found themselves struggling with outdated technology, fractured user experiences, and rising expectations from their stakeholders. At North Studio, I was brought on as a senior developer at a critical time: one when web technologies were rapidly evolving, and organizations needed both stability and future-ready innovation.

## The Challenge
The web was undergoing a transformation. Mobile usage was skyrocketing, device diversity was increasing, and both universities and NGOs were pressured to deliver consistent, engaging experiences. However, legacy systems—built on old versions of Drupal (and sometimes older platforms)—couldn’t keep up. These sites were:
– Unresponsive, and often unusable on smartphones or tablets.
– Tedious to update and manage for non-technical staff.
– Prone to accessibility and security challenges.
– Siloed, with duplicated patterns and inconsistent branding across multiple sites.
The question wasn’t just “How do we upgrade?”—it was: *How do we modernize, scale, and empower these institutions for the next decade?*

## The Solution
Working with a diverse team at North Studio, I led the effort to not just migrate—but to fundamentally *improve* the digital foundations for our clients. Our approach focused on:
### Automated and Reliable Drupal Migrations
We orchestrated seamless moves from Drupal 6 to Drupal 7 for several universities, government portals, and non-profits. This enabled:
– Modernized content workflows and improved editorial user experience.
– Support for robust user roles and permissions—critical for campus and public sector security.
### Single-Sign-On and LDAP Integrations
For higher-education clients, we built and integrated LDAP SSO solutions. This allowed alumni, staff, and students to use their existing credentials across multiple services, reducing support load and improving security.
### Early Mobile-First and Responsive Theming
Well ahead of industry-wide adoption, we implemented:
– Pattern-based responsive starter themes, ensuring accessibility and usability on mobile, desktop, and emerging devices.
– Consistent branding and UI libraries—one agency pattern supported dozens of separate projects.
### Pioneering Hybrid Mobile Apps
In a standout engagement, we developed the “Provincial Parks Tour” as an offline-capable mobile experience (built on PhoneGap). This hybrid app was ahead of its time—delivering park maps, guides, and resources to visitors in remote regions, even without cell coverage.
### DevOps and CI/CD Efficiency
We standardized staging environments, version control, and deployment pipelines, reducing friction for future upgrades and accelerating agency delivery tenfold.

## The Approach
Success required more than just software:
– **Deep Client Collaboration:** I worked one-on-one with university web managers, public sector IT leads, and non-technical staff to map real-world needs to scalable solutions.
– **Documentation and Process:** We created internal playbooks covering migration paths, theme reuse, and site delivery, which became agency standards.
– **Mentorship:** Guiding junior developers and cross-functional teams, I fostered a culture of learning and adaptability.

## Impact
The result? An empowered client base and a transformed agency:
– **Higher-ed and government clients** launched sites that met both current and emerging accessibility and device standards.
– **Site admins** enjoyed drastically improved workflows—leading to faster content updates and greater autonomy.
– **The North Studio team** leveraged shared patterns and playbooks, making every future project more efficient and consistent.
– **The broader community** benefited as public institutions delivered information more reliably across all devices and to all audiences.

## Reflections & Lessons Learned
Adopting responsive, pattern-driven design before it was “the norm” gave our clients a leap forward—and proved the enduring value of *modular thinking* in agency web delivery. Standardization and automation didn’t just cut costs—they freed up time for innovation and creativity, for both development teams and the institutions we served.
